5 Ways Small Businesses Can Use QR Codes

first_imgTags:#biz#How To john paul titlow After a few years of buzz in mobile marketing circles, QR – or “quick response” – codes are finally starting to pop up in the United States, thanks in large part to the proliferation of smart phones. While they’re still not exactly mainstream, QR codes are appearing in major print publications and plastered on storefronts and buildings. At this rate, it won’t be long before most people can immediately recognize and use QR codes. So how can small businesses take advantage of this emerging technology? Turn Foot Traffic Into Web Traffic The most obvious use of QR codes is to drive real-world customers to your company’s Web presence. This is nice and all, but simply sending people to your site’s homepage isn’t always going to be particularly useful. Instead, send them to a specific destination on your site. For example, build a simple, mobile-friendly customer survey. Enter people who fill it out into some kind of giveaway and (transparently) collect their email addresses for future marketing messages. Build Up Social Media FollowersRather than sending users to your own site, why not connect them with your social media profiles? Sending them to your Facebook page or Twitter stream will give them the opportunity to ‘like’ or follow your brand and continue to receive updates long after they’ve walked out the door. It’s now even possible to encode a QR code to automatically ‘like’ a brand on Facebook. Business CardsAs we discussed a few months back, including a QR code on one’s business card can be one way to drag that die-hard relic of last century into this one. As long as business cards still exist in paper format, we might as well put them to some good use in the digital space. Embed a link to your company’s Web site or social media presence in a QR code might not flood your site with traffic, but it can help reinforce those real-world connections you make.Print AdvertisingYes, print advertising. Newspapers and magazines aren’t dead yet, and many advertisers are finding that using QR codes in ads are a good way to bridge the gap between print and online. Unlike other print ads, those containing QR codes can be measured for their effectiveness. This option may not make sense for every type of business, but local service-based companies and others many find it beneficial in some markets. Scavenger Hunts and Other GamesThere are plentyofexamples of scavenger hunts and similar real-world games that have been played using QR codes. In a nutshell, the organizer places a series of printed QR codes throughout a physical space and offers participants prizes – either digital or physical – for finding them. Small, local businesses can easily adopt this model for promotional purposes. Even if it doesn’t directly generate any revenue, it can get people engaged with your brand. Naomi Judd To Attend K9 Battle Buddies Luncheon

first_imgPhilanthropist Lois Pope and American Humane Association, the country’s first national humane organization, are honored to welcome country music legend Naomi Judd to the special “K-9 Battle Buddies” luncheon on Tuesday, March 17 at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. The special event will pay tribute to brave military dogs and their heroic human handlers. Ms. Judd was awarded American Humane Association’s “Humane Legacy Award” at Mrs. Pope’s 2013 Lady in Red Gala for her lifetime dedication to making the world a better place for the infirm and our most vulnerable. She was first known to the world as half of country music’s mother-daughter duo, The Judds. Reaching unprecedented success throughout the 80’s and 90’s, The Judds sold 20 million records, scored fifteen number-one hits, and received over 60 industry awards, including six Grammys, seven consecutive CMA Vocal Group of the Year awards, and the ACM’s Top Vocal Duet award. Her rise to the top of the country music charts was sadly cut short when she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, a chronic liver disease, having contracted the disease from an infected needle during her previous career as a registered nurse. Though The Judds retired from the music industry, Ms. Judd did not retreat from the public spotlight, instead becoming the first national spokesperson for the American Liver Foundation. Utilizing her fame and passion to help people, she spread awareness of this potentially fatal disease, helping save untold numbers of lives. In 2004, she published “Naomi’s Breakthrough Guide: 20 Choices to Transform Your Life,” which remained on the New York Times Bestseller list for more than eight weeks. In 2008 “Naomi’s Guide to Aging Gratefully: Facts, Myths, and Good News for Boomers” hit shelves and impressed critics, medical professionals, and fans. In 2012, she hosted a six-week SiriusXM radio series entitled, “Think Twice.”Ms. Judd’s charity work is far-reaching, and includes River Cities Harvest, the Saint Louis University Liver Center, M.A.D.D., Parents Television Council, Make-A-Difference Day, Women’s World Peace Initiative, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and her own July 4th Judd’s Annual Food Drive to benefit families of Appalachia.Over the past few years she has worked extensively with American Humane Association. Last May she went to Capitol Hill to speak at the organization’s congressional briefing on its “Canines and Childhood Cancer” study, which is seeking to quantify the powerful, soothing touch of animal-assisted therapy for children with cancer and their families. Before her rise to the top of the country music charts, Ms. Judd was a nurse and saw first-hand the bond between children and therapy animals. She spoke to a packed room about why this study is so important. She has also served as a celebrity judge and presenter at the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards, the annual celebration of the extraordinary things done by mankind’s best friend.“Naomi is the living embodiment of a humanitarian, and we are so honored that she is able to join us in Palm Beach on March 17 for the ‘K-9 Battle Buddies’ luncheon,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane Association’s president and CEO. “She has dedicated her life to making the world a better place for so many. Her appreciation for our military heroes knows no bounds, and we know that the heroic military dog teams at the luncheon will cherish their time with her.”“I’m honored to be able to call Naomi Judd my friend,” said Mrs. Pope. “She is a living legend, not just because of her considerable achievements in country music, but through her advocacy, philanthropy, and support of so many wonderful causes. Thank you, Naomi, for joining us at the Mar-a-Lago Club for this special luncheon.”Information about the March 17th “K-9 Battle Buddies” gala luncheon can be provided by Jill Nizan at [email protected] or by calling 1-800-227-4645. Tories attack Morneau with allegations over 2015 sale of Morneau Shepell shares

first_imgOTTAWA – The Conservatives have opened up yet another new line of attack against Bill Morneau, accusing the embattled finance minister of selling off stock the week before his own policy announcement drove the value of the shares down by half a million dollars.Inside the House of Commons on Monday, Tory MPs peppered Morneau with questions about the timing of the sale of $10 million worth of shares in his family-founded human resources firm, Morneau Shepell.Conservative finance critic Pierre Poilievre claimed a motion introduced by Morneau in December 2015 to raise income taxes on the highest earners caused the entire stock market to drop — including Morneau Shepell’s share price.Poilievre fired more than a dozen queries at Morneau on the subject during question period. He asked Morneau to confirm he was the ‘someone’ responsible for selling off about 680,000 shares in the company about a week before the tax-change announcement.“That ‘someone’ would have saved a half a million dollars by avoiding the drop in the stock market that followed his introduction of tax measures in this House of Commons,” Poilievre said.“Was it just a coincidence that those two transactions line up so carefully? Or in fact did the minister jump the gun and sell his shares before he introduced his tax measures?”Morneau largely avoided the queries, insisting simply that he had absolutely nothing to hide.“Members across the way will continue to focus on me because they do not want to talk about what is actually going on,” he said. “What is actually going on is the policies that we put in place are making a better situation for our economy and a better situation for Canadian families.”Daniel Lauzon, a spokesman for Morneau, later called Poilievre’s insinuations “utterly false” and “absurd” — and challenged the Tories to make the accusations outside the House of Commons, where members are not protected by parliamentary privilege.Following question period and outside the House, where he was asked directly about his line of questioning and whether he believed the law had been broken, Poilievre demurred.“We really have to know the details first — I don’t want to speculate,” he said.“We know that ministers have the ability to introduce tax changes on the floor of the House of Commons that could potentially affect stock prices and we think it is important that everybody have that information before that minister acts on it.”Morneau has been at the centre of an ethics controversy for weeks. The ethics commissioner has launched a formal examination to determine if he was in a conflict of interest related to his work to introduce pension-reform legislation, which critics have insisted would benefit Morneau Shepell — a company in which, until recently, Morneau owned about $21 million worth of shares.Morneau was executive chairman of Morneau Shepell, which he helped build with his father, until shortly after the 2015 election and before he was named finance minister a couple of weeks later. After the ethics controversy erupted, he sold off the remainder of his holdings in Morneau Shepell and vowed to place his other substantial assets in a blind trust.Morneau donated the difference between what the shares were worth at the time of the sale and their value in 2015 when he was first elected — an amount estimated at about $5 million. He has also faced intense criticism about his integrity after information surfaced showing that, based on the ethics commissioner’s advice, he did not divest shares or place his holdings in a blind trust after being was named to cabinet.New Democrat ethics critic Nathan Cullen said Morneau failed to clear the air Monday over the 2015 sale of his shares, even though he was given many opportunities to do so.“This is the problem that Mr. Morneau creates for himself continuously — by having made decision after decision that does not fall into even the ballpark of common sense and puts him in a constant threat of conflict of interest,” Cullen said.— Follow @AndyBlatchford on Twitterlast_img read more

Early signs show vulnerabilities to high debt housing have eased central bank

first_imgOTTAWA – The Bank of Canada is flagging the steady climb of household debt and still-hot housing markets as the financial system’s top vulnerabilities — but it’s also seeing some early signs of improvement. In a report Tuesday, the bank said there’s some evidence Canada’s exposure to these persistent trouble spots has begun to ease, thanks to healthy job creation, tightening housing policies and higher mortgages rates. The assessment is part of the bank’s semi-annual review, which explores key vulnerabilities and risks surrounding the stability of the financial system. It describes vulnerabilities as pre-existing conditions that could amplify or propagate economic shocks.“Overall risks to the Canadian financial system remain elevated. Some preliminary signs of improvement, however, are emerging,” the bank said in its latest financial system review.“Better economic conditions and several new policy measures support prospects for additional progress.”The report said indebtedness, especially the number of highly indebted households, remains high. Household debt relative to income has reached historically lofty levels and continues to grow, the bank said. But it noted there’s already some green shoots that suggest stricter lending rules have started to reduce the country’s exposure to hefty debtloads. When asked about the Bank of Canada’s slightly more-optimistic tone compared to its last review in June, governor Stephen Poloz told reporters the most important thing to remember is that the vulnerabilities remain elevated.“These are not measured in decimal points — they’re just elevated,” Poloz said in Ottawa.“That means that any shock that comes our way is going to be magnified by those vulnerabilities and that’s a concern for us.”The report pointed to mortgage insurance policy changes, which included a stress test, introduced by the federal government a year ago.The bank predicted further easing is likely on the way due to higher interest rates and another new stress test to be introduced in the new year, this time aimed at low-ratio mortgages that don’t require insurance. In January, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions will implement new lending guidelines that will require borrowers who do not require mortgage insurance to show they would still be able to make their payments if interest rates were to rise. The Bank of Canada has raised its benchmark rate twice since July and experts predict it’s likely to continue along a gradual hiking path. The combination of these factors is also expected to reduce household imbalances by applying downward pressure on prices in major real-estate markets like Vancouver and Toronto.Still, the bank’s report carefully noted that it’s uncertain exactly how borrowers and lenders will react to the incoming OSFI measures. But it did offer estimates about the impact of the upcoming OSFI changes. The bank said if the new stress tests had been in place for the 12 months leading up to June, then 10 per cent of low-ratio mortgages nationwide would’ve failed to qualify. For Toronto, Vancouver and their surrounding areas, the bank estimated that 12 per cent of mortgages would not have qualified.“The policy changes affecting housing finance are clearly a step in the right direction,” Poloz said.“Still, it will take time for these, as well as the effects of recent interest rate increases, to significantly reduce these vulnerabilities.”In the report, the bank once again listed cyber threats as another key vulnerability for Canada.Poloz has said a cyberattack against the financial system is a scenario that likely troubles him the most. In a recent interview, he said he was unsure how severe the fallout from such an event could be and he struggled to picture what it might look like.“Cyberattacks do not respect borders: they can originate from outside Canada and be transmitted across the global network that financial institutions rely on to operate their businesses,” the report said. The bank said it has been working with industry, international organizations and federal and provincial authorities to improve collaboration and policy-making to ensure rapid response and recovery from a cyber event. An example could include a loss of connectivity or corruption of data within the payments system. The report also assessed how the biggest risks facing Canada have evolved since its last update in June.It said the chances of a severe nationwide recession or a drop in global growth triggered by a significant financial disruption in an emerging market, like China, remained elevated. However, the bank added that the chances of these scenarios playing out were decreasing.Follow @AndyBlatchford on Twitterlast_img read more

Purchase of three icebreakers turns Canadas August trade surplus into a deficit

first_imgOTTAWA – The summertime purchase of three ships from Sweden has wiped out Canada’s healthy trade surplus for August and replaced it with a deficit, Statistics Canada said Friday. The agency made the revision to the August trade figures as it accounted for a $600-million acquisition of three icebreakers late in the month. The $526-million trade surplus initially reported for August now shows a $551-million deficit. The change represents a swing in the trade balance of more than $1 billion.Behind the August revision was a $981-million increase in Canada’s imports.“Most of this revision was due to the import of three high value ships, which were reported after the publication of August data,” the agency said of the transaction, which on its own added $598 million to the monthly import number.“Three icebreakers were imported from Sweden at the end of August.”Statistics Canada says smaller revisions to the monthly numbers are common because purchases sometimes come in after the publication of the data. The agency also made upward revisions in August in other categories, including about $100 million for crude oil imports and $100 million for imports of aircraft-related goods.Last month, the Canadian Coast Guard said three interim icebreakers had been purchased for use over the next 15 to 20 years. The government agreed to buy three used icebreakers from Quebec-based Davie Shipbuilding for $610 million. On average, the existing coast guard ships are more than 35 years old and have lost hundreds of operational days over the past few years due to mechanical breakdowns.Statistics Canada also released its latest merchandise trade numbers that showed the country’s trade deficit with the world narrowed to $416 million in September as imports fell 0.4 per cent and exports dipped 0.2 per cent. The report said Canadian trade with countries other than the United States declined as imports dropped 3.3 per cent and exports slid 1.8 per cent. Its trade deficit with these countries decreased to $5.2 billion to from $5.6 billion in August.Canada’s trade surplus with the U.S., by far its biggest trading partner, narrowed in September to $4.8 billion, from $5 billion. Imports into Canada from the U.S. increased 1.2 per cent, while exports south of the border rose 0.4 per cent.Follow @AndyBlatchford on Twitterlast_img read more

Shooting at school shakes Colorado

first_imgHighlands Ranch (US): Two high school students shot and killed a classmate and injured eight others at a charter school in a Colorado community that marked the 20th anniversary of one of the nation’s worst school shootings just weeks ago. Douglas County sheriff’s officials said Devon Erickson, 18, and a younger student walked into the STEM School Highlands Ranch Tuesday afternoon and opened fire on students in two classrooms, prompting students to run shouting through the halls or to hide out of sight as gunfire echoed through school. “At the moment no one really knew what was going on so I didn’t know they were bullets,” said seventh-grader Sophia Marks. “I just kind of saw like flashes and we heard bangs.” Within minutes, deputies at a nearby sheriff’s department substation entered the school and arrested the two suspects after a struggle. Both were students at the school and they were not previously known to authorities, Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. Josh Dutton, 18, told The Associated Press that he was close friends with Devon Erickson in middle school but hadn’t seen him for four years as he went to a different high school. On Sunday, he spotted Erickson at a local light rail station and said he was shocked at how much his friend had changed. Erickson wore all black, a hat and sunglasses, was significantly skinnier and didn’t seem interested in talking. “He said he’d just turned 18 and he owned rifles,” Dutton said. A message left at a phone number listed for Erickson’s home was not immediately returned. The shooting took place exactly a week after a gunman killed two students and wounded four at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. It also comes nearly three weeks after neighboring Littleton marked the grim 20th anniversary of the Columbine school massacre that killed 13 people. The two schools are separated by about 7 miles (11 kilometers) in adjacent communities south of Denver. “Tragically, this community and those surrounding it know all too well these hateful and horrible acts of violence,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement. President Donald Trump had been briefed on the shooting and was in touch with state and local officials, Deere said. “The heart of all Colorado is with the victims and their families,” Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement.last_img read more
