Circle1710199—55 Wellington12181111—52 Wellington girls had a frustrating night. But if you are looking for spin, throw out one quarter and the Lady Dukes outscored the Thunderbirds in all three quarters 45-36.That third quarter, though, was a clunker. Circle outscored Wellington 22-6.“We got to play four quarters with effort, energy and enthusiasm,” said Eric Adams, Wellington head girls basketball coach. “But tonight we couldn’t get all five girls at once on the floor to give out maximum effort. We’d have two or three girls play hard at one time and then two or three other girls play hard at other times.“I promised I wasn’t going to use the Y word anymore and that’s ‘youth.’ We are eight games into the season and we need to stop using that as an excuse.”Yet for all its deficiencies with 29 turnovers and getting out-rebounded 38 to 28, Wellington was still in it late.Wellington had narrowed the margin to just three points 54-51 with 23.1 seconds.Circle then would make two free throws a rarity for the T-birds on this night and would eventually up the lead to a seven point victory.  Overall, Circle was just 10 of 38 from the line.Crusaders had it going early, leading 13-10 and 25-20 at the half. But Adams didn’t think much of the first half.“Honestly, I’m not sure how we had the lead,” Adams said. “We coaches were scratching our heads wondering how the heck we could possibly be in front.”Then the bottom fell out in the third quarter as Circle opened the half quickly tying the game up. After the game was knotted 29-all, Circle would outscore the Crusaders 13-2 to take an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter.Wellington is now 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the AV-CTL DIV. The Dukes travel to Clearwater Tuesday. Wellington: Gilmore 2, Phelps 5, Reichenberger 6, Walton 2, Nance 14, Pettegrew 3, Snipes 15, King 5. Total: 15 (3) 12-21 52. Girls Circle10102216—58center_img ESPN Sportscenter makes appearance in Wellington Circle basketball game.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington Crusader basketball teams opened their 2015 home campaign with losses they might have thought could have been victories.Wellington boys lost a close one to Circle 55-52 while the girls fell to the T-birds 58-51.It was a raucous crowd tonight at Crusader gymnasium. A good home crowd came out with a large contingency of college kids spending their last weekend before going back to school. Circle brought down a vocal, cranky group, who spent the evening screaming at the refs. But perhaps the stars of the evening were seated in the corner. The ESPN Sportscenter Crew made up of Connor “Baby Bull” Burnett, Jason “Peanut” Norris, Zach “Skip” Bodkin, and  Trey “Twey” Coulter, who were situated in the corner in a booth. It was a fun evening on a cold winter night. In the boys game, Circle’s Cal Hartley almost single handedly buried the Crusaders with 23 points and countless rebounds in lifting the Thunderbirds to a 3-point victory in what was probably a battle for third place in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV.“When we got a ball reversal we were pretty good,” said Brian Buchanan, Wellington head boys basketball coach. “When we played one-on-one ball, we weren’t very good.”Buchanan said Circle out-rebounding Wellington was the main difference in the game.A.J. Snipes scores 15 points.“I think the key sequence in the game was in the final minute when we allowed three offensive rebounds,” Buchanan said. “You aren’t going to be successful when you do that.”Wellington had its chances late. Circle established momentum in the third quarter and would eventually build a 10-point lead. Wellington would cut the lead to five at quarter’s end and was trailing by four for most of the fourth quarter. With one minute to play in the game, A.J. Snipes would make a key layup to pull the Dukes within one.But Circle would then up it back to four and would hold onto the win.Snipes had his best varsity game so far as a freshman scoring 15 points. Trevor Nance had 14.Snipes biggest moment came right at the buzzer of the first half. After Wellington had taken its first lead since the early stages of the first quarter, the Crusaders worked the ball around for the final shot. After a miss, Snipes made the offensive rebound and scored at the buzzer. The crowd went ballistic as Wellington led 30-27 at the half.Wellington now 4-3, travels to Clearwater Tuesday.
