Liverpool vs. Norwich City results: Liverpool dominates with 4-goal first half in Premier League opener

first_imgLiverpool dominated the Premier League season opener against Norwich City, taking the match 4-1 with all four scores coming in the first half. The Reds were able to sit back in the second half as they coasted to an easy win in their first match of the 2019-20 season. As for Norwich City, they could not get anything going, essentially from the start as the first goal in their return to the Premier League was an own-goal off the leg of captain Grant Hanley in the seventh minute. Two more goals were recorded by the 29th minute and another late in the first half to make the halftime score 4-0 and gave Liverpool the commanding lead.Watch live Premier League games:fuboTV (United States) | DAZN (Canada)The first-half performance did come at a price for Liverpool as goalkeeper Alisson left the game in the 39th minute with an injury. He was able to walk off under his own power although a stretcher was brought onto the pitch for him. In his absence, backup keeper Adrian put up a fine performance, recording some solid saves despite letting in one goal in the second half on a one-on-one situation. On the other side of the pitch, Norwich City simply couldn’t get anything settled. Even on their attacks, the timing was off, resulting in five offsides calls to Liverpool’s zero. Two players were also granted yellow cards in the second half for Norwich as they likely began to feel the match truly slipping away despite their second-half goal.Jurgen Klopp’s team was able to control the pace throughout the contest, holding possession for 59 minutes and beating Norwich City in just about every statistical category. The Reds will face tougher competition during the season but the season-opening domination bodes well for the defending UEFA Champions League winners.Liverpool came as close to winning the Premier League title as a team can get last season, conceding the victory to Manchester City by a single point despite the Reds winning their last nine Premier League matches to close the season. Liverpool did taste sweet success when it took the Champions League trophy with their win over Tottenham in June.Norwich City won the 2019 EFL Championship and thus earned a spot to play in the Premier League once again. The last time Norwich City made the Premier League was only for a short, one-season stint in 2015-16. Last season was the first time Norwich City won their league since 2010 when they won the English Football League One. The club’s most successful season in the Premier League was 1992-93 — the inaugural season of the league — when Norwich City finished third and qualified for the UEFA Cup.Sporting News tracked live scoring updates and highlights from the 2019 Premier League opener.MORE:  Liverpool faces daunting task of closing gap on Manchester City, againLiverpool vs. Norwich City: Live updates, highlights from 2019 Premier League openerLiverpool: 4Norwich City: 190′ (+2) — Final.
