PALMDALE In its annual search for heroes who are courageous, dedicated and committed to helping others, Swedish carmaker Volvo has named as one a second-generation environmental activist who works to protect communities from industrial pollutants. Jane Williams, 46, of Palmdale was one of three winners in the fourth annual Volvo for Life Awards and was feted at a ceremony last week at the Rainbow Room in New York City. “It’s great to be honored for the work that you’ve done. I’m grateful for the award and grateful for the recognition,” said Williams, daughter of the late Rosamond environmental activist Stormy Williams, who for years prodded regulatory agencies to clean up toxic waste in Rosamond and Mojave and lobbied against hazardous waste incinerators. Williams was picked as the winner in the environment category. There were two other categories for safety and quality of life. Winners receive $50,000 to give to a charity of their choice, a trip to the New York awards ceremony for themselves and a guest, and a role in a Volvo heroes documentary. The grand prize of a new Volvo car every three years for the rest of one’s life was awarded to one of the other recipients. Williams was nominated for the award by Robina Suwol, executive director of California Safe Schools, with whom Williams worked on passing legislation to ban the use of experimental pesticides in schools. The law, which was sponsored by Suwol’s organization, took effect this year. “I know of no one more deserving for the work that she has done for so many people for so many years,” Suwol said. “I’m very grateful for her help, especially on environmental justice issues. She’s been really incredible.” Volvo spokesman Soren Johansson said Williams is worthy of the award. “Jane has over a long period of time contributed substantially to cleaning up the environment in California,” Johansson said. “She has put in a lot of dedication and hard work.” Williams serves as executive director of California Communities Against Toxics, a network of local environmental justice groups in California. Volvo officials noted that Williams is carrying on in the tradition of her mother, who launched a campaign that sought to identify toxins causing a brain cancer cluster among children in Rosamond. Jane Williams has organized dozens of communities to successfully fight the building of facilities that would pollute their environment, such as incinerators, landfills, nuclear waste dumps and industrial plants, Volvo officials said. Additionally, she has served on a number of federal and state advisory committees that study the effects of toxic chemicals on children and public health. She recently helped establish a new organization, the National Disease Cluster Alliance, which seeks to help communities investigate cancer clusters among children, as well as other grave health problems caused by environmental pollutants.
