Miami VA hosts 1st baby shower for expecting veterans

first_imgMIAMI (WSVN) – A South Florida organization is taking care of diaper duty for some brave mothers-to-be.The Miami VA Women Veterans Program collected donations from Miami VA employees and businesses at its first baby shower, Saturday. The event aims to help about 50 local pregnant veterans with the arrivals of their newborn babies.“We have nearly 5,000 women veterans from Monroe County up to Broward, and 72 are currently pregnant,” said an event organizer.The shower, held at the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center in Miami, gave people an opportunity to donate clothing, toiletries, diapers, toys, gift cards and more.“It is an honor to serve these women,” said one woman. “They put boots on the ground just like the men did.”“We donated 4,860 diapers, I believe, so there’s a box of diapers donated to each mom here,” said Divya Nawalrai with the Miami Diaper Bank.Veteran Dana Humes is ready to have her second child, and she is grateful for the program. “Ms. Debra, the coordinator here, has been fabulous,” Humes said. “It’s a complete transition from my first pregnancy, and this one with the VA, they’ve stepped up a lot.” Organizers said the event was a success, and they look forward to putting it on again. “We had a great turnout, and a lot of excitement, a lot of great energy so we’d really like to continue it,” said Michelle Zielenski, The Women Veterans Program Manager.For more information on services offered by the Miami VA Women Veterans Program go to www.miami.va.gov/services/women.Copyright 2019 Sunbeam Television Corp.
