The piles are a result of thinning along the Refuge boundary, a portion of the Sterling Fuel Break. According to the Refuge, the fuel break is intended to provide protection to the residents and infrastructure around Sterling, as well as give managers more decision space to make more informed decisions about wildfires that occur in the area.center_img The burning began on Tuesday, December 11, and is expected to be completed today.last_img
