Turkey most valuable for Aus travellers Expedia

first_imgAussies planning an overseas trip could save big bucks by travelling to Turkey, with the strong Australian dollar gaining up to 22 percent on the Turkish Lira over the past year.According to an Expedia NAB Travellers’ Foreign Currency Rankings, Turkey topped the list for the best value destination based on how the Australian dollar performed in the past 12 months. While the US Department of Commerce noted a 17 percent increase in Aussies choosing to take advantage of the dollar and book trips into the US, those travellers could gain more from booking trips into destinations like Tanzania, Vietnam and Argentina that saw the AUD gain 18 percent, 16 percent and 14 percent over their shilling, dongs and pesos.“We are lucky our travel dollars are going further in destinations on every continent. Combined with the cheap travel deals on offer at the moment, an overseas holiday doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg,” Expedia Australia and NZ marketing manager Amee Evans said. “Keeping an eye out for sales, being aware of flight booking fees, and being flexible with both your destination and travel dates are other ways travellers can make every dollar count.”  The AUD also saw a percentage gain over Thailand’s baht for the 12 month period by 12 percent as well as Iceland, Hong Kong and Pakistan.Although it seems as though major countries across the world have become more affordable, the AUD fell against the Swiss Franc and New Zealand dollar by five percent and two percent, increasing the cost of travel into those regions.“The Australian Dollar has outperformed in the year as it benefits from the ongoing resource boom and high commodity prices,” NAB currency strategist Emma Lawson added.“More recently it has been a little more volatile but we expect it to remain relatively strong compared to historical levels across a broad range of currencies due to Australia’s AAA status, and continued support from the resources sector.” Source = e-Travel Blackboard: N.Jlast_img
