97-year-old son of world’s oldest person dies

first_imgHarold Fairweather Harold Fairweather, the oldest child of the world’s oldest person, Violet Brown, died at his Duanvale, Trelawny home in Jamaica Wednesday morning. He died after a brief illness.Prior to his death, Fairweather held the record for being the oldest living person with a parent alive.Fairweather’s mother celebrated her 117th birthday last month, while he observed the 97th anniversary of his birth on Saturday. His birthday coincided with the day Brown is believed to have become the world’s oldest living person following the death of previous world’s oldest, Emma Morano of Italy.Brown, born March 10, 1900, is considered to be the oldest person in the world with credible birth documentation, according to Robert Young, director of the supercentenarian research and database division at Gerontology Research Group, a network of volunteer researchers into the world’s oldest people. But she is yet to be declared the world’s oldest by Guinness World Records, considered to be the official arbiter of the oldest person title but Guinness depends heavily on Young’s group. Young said he has met Brown and examined her birth certificate, which was issued by the British authorities who governed Jamaica at the time of her birth.last_img read more

Miami-Dade students continue to shine on National Assessment

first_imgMiami-Dade County Public Schools students continue to turn in remarkable achievement, as revealed by National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results released on April 10. More than 6,700 students in 161 Miami-Dade County schools participated in the 2017 grades 4 and 8 NAEP administration. NAEP is the gold standard and compares M-DCPS students’ performance to the Nation and other large urban districts. “Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ students continue to surpass the nation on standardized assessments, including NAEP-TUDA,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. Impressive achievement“Miami-Dade’s results for what is widely considered the Nation’s Report Card, suggests that academic standards, instructional rigor, and student achievement continue to move on an upward trend in our school district. This is an impressive achievement that our School Board, students, teachers, employees and the entire community can celebrate.” Notable gains in 4th Grade Reading and MathMike Casserly, Executive Director of the Council of Great City Schools said, “Miami-Dade County Public Schools continues its remarkable track record of reform and improvement on the Nation’s Report Card. Particularly notable are the gains the District saw in fourth grade Reading and Mathematics, which place the system among the highest performing in the nation.” Additionally, Casserly indicated that Miami-Dade was one of four TUDA districts to defy the national trend on the growing gap between the highest and lowest performing students. With a disproportionately high population of English Language Learners, M-DCPS fourth grade students demonstrated remarkable performance in comparison to the nation and other large urban districts.Nationally, M-DCPS fourth graders ranked #1 in Reading, and #2 in Mathematics. Miami-Dade along with the other two Florida Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) districts significantly outscored the nation, large city sample, and all other TUDA districts in both Reading and Mathematics, in Grade 4.Grade 4 M-DCPS students, overall and for all subgroups, scored higher than the national public school and large city samples in both Reading and Mathematics. In M-DCPS’s fifth year of participation in the national assessment, M-DCPS Hispanic students continue to shine, achieving higher Reading and Mathematics scale scores in all tested grade levels than both the national public school and large city samples. Significant growth was seen in Reading and Mathematics scale scores for fourth grade students in the District from 2009 to 2017.M-DCPS was the only TUDA district to exhibit significant scale score growth from 2015 to 2017 in Grade 4 Mathematics. In Grade 8, M-DCPS students outscored the large city sample in Reading and matched them in Mathematics.About NAEP and TUDA  NAEP provides an essential measurement of student achievement in the United States. In mathematics, reading, science, and writing, student achievement is reported for selected urban districts as well as for the nation and the states. The assessments administered in TUDA are exactly the same as those given nationally in main NAEP, using identical administration procedures. The assessments follow the subject area frameworks developed by the Governing Board. Like the national and state main assessments, TUDA does not provide individual scores for the students or schools assessed. TUDA districts can monitor their progress over time in the selected subject areas at grades 4 and 8. In addition to comparing to the national public results, TUDA district results are also compared to results from large cities nationwidelast_img read more

Nick Troubertzkoy’s Paradise in St. Lucia: Jade Mountain Resort

first_imgPhoto edited by Mark James CASTRIES, St. Lucia – Birds chirp sweetly as if they are saying ‘leve! leve!’ (get up! get up!) In St. Lucian patois. The sunlight peeks, as a faint breeze kisses you on the cheek, the sound of waves lashing against the stone saying, ‘that’s enough sleep, you have arrived, you’re here at Jade Mountain, it’s time to begin your day’. You open your eyes and its reality, not a dream.  You are in your sanctuary at Nick Troubetzkoy’s Jade Mountain in St. Lucia. Yes, sanctuary, because its suites are too special to be called rooms, they are called sanctuaries. This picturesque property is complemented by a breathtaking ocean view with St. Lucia’s Piton Mountains insight.Jade Mountain’s enthralling landscape makes one feel as if they are in another world. Entering this property at night gives the sense of “natural mystic blowing in the air.” The journey there is no easy feat; it is a slow process up a one-lane gravel road high up the mountain. The ride is mesmerizing though, and sure to make the visitor wonder how construction was accomplished. The journey is worth it, and the staff at Jade Mountain and its amenities, make sure of that.Once there is verification visitors are on the list, Jade’s personal driver takes you the rest of the way. Once at the resort, they are greeted with warm smiles, a cool washcloth with aromatherapy and a glass of fruit-infused water. Once assigned a Butler/Major Domos (like the awesome Tony!), you are ushered to your sanctuary, and given a cell phone to reach them.  This astounding oasis is divine and comes with a butler too?  What more can one ask for?  This is awesome!A little background about Jade Mountain which is located 1.5 miles North of Soufriere, approximately 55 minutes from UVF Hewanorra International Airport.  Known for its organic architecture, it sits on Morne Chastanet which overlooks St. Lucia’s Piton World Heritage site and the Caribbean Sea. The property rises majestically above the 600-acre beachfront estate and Anse Chastanet Resort.Nick Troubetzkoy, a Russian-Canadian architect, worked with Ron Thom, Bud Wood and Arthur Erickson to build a masterpiece. Troubetzkoy’s love for St. Lucia led him to build it and resorts like the Anse Chastanet.According to their website, “It was his foremost desire to create a unique living experience that would not only take full advantage of the unforgettable views of St. Lucia’s Piton mountains but to essentially allow the onlooker to float into space and become one with them.”Having “great” respect for local woodworkers and masons, Mr. Troubetzkoy employed them to work on his resort which has a distinctive Caribbean flavor. Its 15-feet high ceilings and environmentally-friendly furniture are from St. Lucia; hardwood floors were done in Guyana; and walls were complete with Crushed Blush-toned coral plaster from Barbados. The bathroom is European-inspired with no artificial air.Internet access is available in the reception area as well as the sanctuaries if requested. However, the philosophy at Jade Mountain is to enjoy a “techno-free ambiance.”Other attractive amenities include a boutique, spa, fitness studio, restaurant, and pools. Jade Mountain specializes in Infinity pools (where it appears the pool meets the ocean) which is a perfect setting for lovers.Sanctuaries have celestial categories; the Star, Moon, Sun, Sky and Galaxy. If the visitor is fortunate to be housed in a Galaxy with is the highest level, they will have the “most commanding panoramic views plus biggest square footage.”  There are dining services available and specialty candlelight packages on request or they can dine at Anse Chastanet.Chef de Cuisine Elijah Jules and his team prepare succulent dishes and delightful desserts.Activities of interest include Jazzy Champagne Sunset Cruise, Yoga, Zip Lining, and SeaLife cameras. There is also scuba diving or snorkeling, the Chocolate Lab, shopping, an art gallery and culinary activities if one chooses to leave their sanctuary.Jade Mountain lives up to its lofty reputation. It is obvious why it has won several awards including Most Breathtaking View from Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and Number One Resort in St. Lucia. It is the only restaurant in the English-Speaking Caribbean to earn a 3 Chef Hat (Toque) rating.   This is a must-do for your Bucket List, you would not have fully lived if you have not experienced Jade Mountain!last_img read more
